The families of two jockeys who died in an apparent arson attack in North Yorkshire have paid tribute to them.

Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson died in a fire at flats in Norton in the early hours of Saturday.

Mr Kyne, 18, from Galway in the Irish Republic, was a "role model" who succeeded at everything he chose to do, his family said.

Miss Wilson's parents said their daughter, from Forfar, had an ambitious spirit and had been "living the dream".

In a statement issued by North Yorkshire Police, Mr Kyne's family said: "It is a testament to Jamie who has been taken from us in the most heart-breaking way, that even on his passing he continues to make us all so proud of him.

'Angel like him'

"Jamie succeeded in all he chose to do, from hurling to boxing, to chasing his dream of becoming the next Frankie Dettori.

"He is, and will continue to be, a role model for us all.

"Why Jamie was taken from us we will never know but an angel like him deserved a better chance of life."

Miss Wilson's parents, Margaret and Drew, said their daughter had wanted to be a jockey from an early age and was "determined and totally fearless in the saddle". Miss Wilson began riding as a child and competed in equestrian events before moving to England in 2007 to pursue her career as a jockey.

Her parents said her career took off when she bought the horse Imperial Sword, which she rode to victory at Ripon, Haydock and Ayr racecourses.

"Jan's outgoing personality, friendly manner, her ambition and competitive spirit will be missed by her family members and many friends," her parents said.

"She did indeed live the dream, if not for long."

A man in his 30s who was arrested in connection with the fire has been released on bail.

Meanwhile, jockey charity Racing Welfare has announced it is launching an appeal to help those affected by the fire.

The Malton Fire Disaster Appeal Fund will raise money for the families of Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson, as well as supporting other racing staff who were left homeless after the fire.

People can send donations to Racing Welfare, 5b Commercial Street, Norton, North Yorkshire, or can telephone 01638 560 763.
