A champion rider has donated some of his prize money to an appeal fund set up in memory of two jockeys who died in an apparent arson in North Yorkshire. Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, died in a fire at flats in Norton, near Malton, on 5 September. Ryan Moore has been crowned 2009 Champion Flat Jockey and donated £3,232.32 of his winnings to the Malton Fire Disaster Fund. Donations to the appeal have now topped £60,000. In addition, another £3,232.32 of the winnings will be given to the Injured Jockeys Fund with Mr Moore keeping the same amount for himself. On-going inquiry Mr Moore said: "Although I am obviously delighted to have become Champion Flat Jockey for the third time, 2009 is a year that jockeys will remember for the terrible loss of apprentices Jan Wilson and Jamie Kyne." Kevin Darley, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys Association, said: "To lose two young people aged 18 and 19 that were clearly going to dedicate their lives to a sport that we all have a passion for, it's absolutely devastating." There were thought to be six people in the flats in Buckrose Court when the fire broke out. Apprentice jockeys Mr Kyne, from Galway, in the Republic of Ireland, and Miss Wilson, from Forfar, Scotland, were on the second floor. Two other people were injured, one of whom jumped out of a window to escape the flames. Last week, police said a man arrested in connection with the fire had been released from bail. The force said the fire was still being treated as suspicious and officers were investigating.
