Vigil held for fire death jockey

Mourners at the vigil
The vigil service was held at a church in Malton

A vigil has taken place for one of the young jockeys who died in an apparent arson attack at a block of flats in North Yorkshire.

Family and friends of Jamie Kyne, from Galway, gathered at St Leonard and St Mary's church in Malton.

A funeral service for the 18-year-old will be held at the church on Thursday before his body is flown back to the Irish Republic for a private ceremony.

Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, also died in the fire in Norton on 5 September.

Miss Wilson's funeral will take place in Scotland next week.

The pair were killed while they were at a party at flats in Buckrose Court in the early hours.

Mr Kyne's aunt Lorraine Lee said the family had been touched by the messages of sympathy they had received.

"People have been fantastic, they have been so nice and caring," she said.

Tribute to Jamie Kyne
A fund set up in the memory of the jockeys has raised 39,000

"Jamie had a lot of followers. He put his heart into everything he did and thought everything through.

"He wasn't just going to be a jockey, he was going to be a champion. Jamie never missed a race. It was his life."

Permanent tribute

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the fire to come forward.

They have released CCTV images of four people who may be witnesses.

Police said one person had come forward but they still wanted to trace the others.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested and released on bail in connection with the incident.

A fund set up in the memory of the jockeys has so far raised £39,000.

Former champion jockey Lester Piggott was among those who made donations to The Malton Disaster Appeal Fund, the charity Racing Welfare said.

The charity is set to meet the families of the two jockeys along with representatives from the racing world to discuss a permanent tribute to them.
