
A series of fatal stabbings has prompted Home Secretary John Reid to call for serious offences involving knives and sharp instruments to be recorded separately.
Here is a snapshot, up to 18 March, of all fatal incidents this month: 15 people have died in stabbings. There were no such deaths in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
ADAM REGIS, PLAISTOW, 17 MARCH
Adam Regis, 15-year-old nephew of former athlete John Regis, collapsed at the junction of Boundary Road and Kingsland Road in Plaistow, east London.
He had been stabbed in the chest and abdomen and died in hospital soon after.
A teenager has been arrested in connection with the death.
STEPHEN PARKIN, HATTERSLEY, 17 MARCH
Seven people were arrested over the fatal stabbing of Stephen Parkin, 22, outside the Premier Travel Inn on Stockport Road in Hattersley, Tameside.
They were questioned on suspicion of murder and later released on bail pending further inquiries.
DAVON LANDELL, MOSS SIDE, 17 MARCH
Davon Landell, 24, was stabbed to death in the Moss Side Community Centre in Manchester.
He leaves a wife, Jameela Landell, and three-year-old daughter Surriyah, and a large family in Manchester.
His sister Norma Grant, said: "He wasn't a violent person, yet his life was taken away by someone who is such a coward."
KEVIN PLATT, FARNWORTH, 16 MARCH
Kevin Platt, 30, was pronounced dead on arrival at a Bolton hospital. Police said there had been a fight on Church Road in Farnworth.
Officers are questioning two men, aged 20 and 19, arrested on suspicion of murder.
SUE HALE & SARAH MERRITT, SOUTHAMPTON, 15 MARCH
Police have charged a 47-year-old man with the murders of a disabled woman and her carer at a flat in Southampton.
The bodies of Sue Hale, 49, who suffered from a rare degenerative brain disorder, and carer Sarah Merritt, 39, were found in a flat in Townhill Park. Post-mortem examinations revealed that both had died from stab wounds.
DAVID GAVIN, MARGATE, 14 MARCH
The body of David Gavin, 26, was discovered at his flat in Athelstan Road, Margate. Earlier he had been seen having an argument involving more than one person on the same street.
Magistrates have granted police more time to question a woman, aged 19, and man, 23, who were arrested separately.
KODJO YENGA, HAMMERSMITH, 14 MARCH
Kodjo Yenga, 16, died from a single stab wound to the heart in Hammersmith, west London.
Four youths - two aged 13, one aged 15 and a 16-year-old - have been charged with his murder.
FATHER PAUL BENNETT, TRECYNON, 14 MARCH
Father Bennett, 59, died in the grounds of St Fagan's church in Trecynon, south Wales, after being stabbed.
Geraint David Evans, 23, appeared at Aberdare Magistrates' Court charged with the vicar's murder.
DIANE INGRAM, CANNOCK, 13 MARCH
Diane Ingram, 61, was found stabbed in the neck in a ground floor flat in Cannock, Staffs.
Police said on March 20 that they were continuing to follow up several lines of inquiry but were very keen to speak to her estranged husband, Harold James Ingram. He was last seen on a bus in Walsall Road, Cannock, shortly before 1530 GMT on the day of Mrs Ingram's death.
JILLIAN FROOM, MIDDLESBROUGH, 9 MARCH
Police have charged a man with the murder of mother-of-three Jillian Froom, who was found stabbed to death in her Teesside home.
The 35-year-old was discovered on by one of her three sons in the living room of her home in Middlesbrough.
JASON SPENCER, NOTTINGHAM, 6 MARCH
Jason Spencer, 17, was found dead on a Nottingham street.
Police said he had died from a single stab wound to the chest.
CHARLES McDONAGH, HAYES, 5 MARCH
Charles McDonagh, 31, died after being stabbed in the chest during a fight in the Great Western Pub in Hayes, Middlesex. William Lawrence, 23, from east London, has been charged with his murder.
ODWAYNE ANTHONY BARNES, BIRMINGHAM, 5 MARCH
Three people have been charged with the murder of 16-year-old Odwayne Anthony Barnes.
He was stabbed outside Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham.
CARL JAMES, SWINDON, 4 MARCH
Michael Bruce Harris, 20, was charged with murder following a stabbing in Swindon.
Police found 21-year-old Carl James in a critical condition and took him to hospital, where he died.
