Row over States election procedure
The States of Alderney
Alderney residents are being consulted over the issue
A St Peter Port deputy has joined the call to give Alderney residents the chance to choose how they are represented in Guernsey States.

A war of words has broken out over attempts to gauge the opinion of Alderney voters in the wake of constitutional changes in Guernsey.

Deputy Tony Webber believes the people of Alderney have the right to elect their representatives in the States of Deliberation directly.

He says the current system in which Alderney States members decide for themselves is not democratic.

Guernsey's Procedures and Constitution Committee is consulting Alderney residents to find out what they think.

But Alderney States members are firmly opposed to the proposal, which they say would damage the island's legal and traditional independence.
