Two member spoke out over the letter |
Changing the way Alderney is represented in Guernsey's States is causing a stir in the island. Guernsey's States Procedures and Constitution committee has circulated a letter to every household in Alderney, even though Alderney's Policy and Finance committee has said the current system is fine as it is.
At Wednesday night's States meeting in Alderney, two members spoke out against the letter which suggested a change in the way Alderney representatives are elected to the States of Guernsey.
Both members described the new proposals as a "less than democratic" approach to government.
Island-wide vote
But Guernsey's States Procedures and Constitution Committee says the Harwood Report recommended Alderney should decide whether they keep the present system, whereby Alderney's States selects two of their number to sit in Guernsey's States, or two candidates are chosen by an island-wide vote.
The letter from the States Procedures and Constitution Committee, and signed by president, Deputy Roger Berry, says now douzaine representatives have been abolished from Guernsey's States, the only members not directly elected by the electorate are the two from Alderney.
