Alderney's States 'needs women'
The States of Alderney
At present there are no women in the States
The government of Alderney has been described by one islander as a "geriatric social club" mainly concerned with preserving the island as a pre-Wartime retirement home.

Residents of the island have expressed concern that the composition of the States fails to represent the community.

At present there are no women in the States and the average age of the 10 members is currently 61.

And former members say women should not be deterred from standing in the forthcoming by-election in Alderney.

'Forceful character'

One former politician Pamela Jorgenson, believes that if they can spare the time, women have much to offer.

But she says they should not allow themselves to be pigeon holed.

"You have to be quite a forceful character to stand up because I think women will always be in the minority on the States.

"You have to point out straight from the beginning you are not going to be the one who is going to make the coffee," she said.

"If you feel strongly about it have a go, have a try," said another former member Bill Walden.

"If enough like-minded people who wanted to get something done were elected to the States then we might actually get somewhere."
