Electrical appliance eyesore removed

The pile of old electrical appliances was causing an eyesore
Hundreds of old electrical appliances piling up at an Alderney rubbish tip have finally been removed.

After proving an eyesore at the Impot for months, the scrap metal items are on their way to be recycled, under the order of the States of Alderney.

More than 300 appliances, including old fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers, have been shipped back to Guernsey for processing.

The island has entered into an arrangement with Guernsey Recycling.

Shipped out

Scrap metal will be shipped out as soon as containers can be filled.

When they reach Guernsey, all the items will be processed to extract the recyclable elements.

Although the new scheme is costing Alderney dear, new European Community regulations mean the traditional method of shipping to the UK is no longer an option.

However, the island is still seeking a different long-term solution to the problem.
