Meet the Measure family: Mum, Ethan, Abi, and Dad.
Dad's on breakfast duty this morning, and he's making pancakes.
His pancake recipe is for four people, which gives all the Measures one nice big pancake each.
DAD: Who's for the first one?
ETHAN: Me! Me! Me!
ABI: Oh, I'll have it!
MUM: Quick! Quick!
DAD: Move that soldier. Mind yourself.
MUM: Look at this.
DAD: Da-da.
MUM: Oh! Look at that. Round of applause for Dad. Fantastic.
NARRATOR: Mmm, I like pancakes. Don't you? The Measures like theirs with lots of maple syrup.
MUM: Delicious.
NARRATOR: Dad can't make them quick enough.
ABI: Come on!
NARRATOR: He's showing off now. One for Abi.
MUM: Maple syrup, please.
NARRATOR: One for Mum.
MUM: Thank you, darling.
NARRATOR: They don't last long, do they?

NARRATOR: Oh, someone's at the door.
DAD: Look who it is!
ALL: Hi! Hello!
NARRATOR: It's Nikita and Eli. They can smell something delicious.
ETHAN: What are you eating?
MUM: We're having pancakes. Would you like some?
ETHAN: Yes, please.
MUM: Come on in, then.
NARRATOR: Now they want pancakes as well. "Two each, please." And everyone else says they want another one.
ETHAN: Oh yes!
ABI: Oh yeah!
MUM: Dad, stay in the kitchen. We need more pancakes.
ETHAN: Woo-hooo!
MUM: Thanks, Dad.
NARRATOR: But Dad's recipe only makes four. Can you help him work out how to make enough pancakes for everyone?
Let's do maths!
NARRATOR: Dad's recipe is for four pancakes. Can you adjust the amounts to make eight? Adjust the amounts in Dad's original recipe from 4 to 6.
What can you do about the egg? All together, Dad made twelve pancakes for breakfast. Everyone had 20ml of maple syrup on each pancake. How much was left out of a 375ml bottle?

The real life context asks children to adapt recipes and quantities.
Important skills of doubling and measures are practised including making practical decisions about what to do with 1 egg when needing to halve.
The measures are weight and capacity. Three differentiated questions are asked at the end and can provide opportunities for extension questions being set by the teacher or child.
This is an activity that could be used around Shrove Tuesday.
Ask the children what they have baked or used a recipe recently for? Pause the clip when the pancake recipe is shown.
If the recipe is for four people, what different recipes can you generate from this where it is for a different number of people? Use this as a stimulus when baking with children and following recipes.
What would need to have been done before the pancake was put in the pan?
Select a recipe and adapt it to make it for a different amount of people - discuss ratios and how these need to remain the same.
