• In 1954 Roger Bannister is the first man to run a mile in under four minutes at the Iffley road track in Oxford.

• In 1955 the McDonald's restaurant chain was founded.

• In 1958 both NASA and LEGO were also founded.

• The construction of the Berlin Wall in post-war Germany began.

• The Cuban missile crisis took place.

• 1963 saw the assassination of JFK in Dallas, Texas.

• The inspirational "I have a dream speech" by Dr. Martin Luther King.
