Events between 1914-1923
• Europe (and later the World) is rocked by the outbreak of The First World War in 1914. The war would rage for another four years at a cost of millions of lives.

• The Panama Canal opens to shipping for the first time.

• The Brassiere is patented by Mary Phelps Jacob.

• Stanley Matthews "The Wizard Of Dribble" was born in Hanley 1915. He played first class football over thirty years and maintained close contact with Stoke City F.C. after his retirement in 1965.

• Tragedy struck in 1918 when the Minnie Pit Disaster in Halmerend claimed 155 lives.
