| Monday, 9 July, 2001, 21:41 GMT 22:41 UK Gustafsson falls in Sweden Gustafsson: Early end to his last ever Bastad Open Second seed, Dominik Hrbaty, and seventh seed, Magnus Gustafsson, have been knocked out in the first round of the US$350,000 Swedish Open in Bastad. Local favourite Gustafsson, who plans to retire after the Stockholm Open in the autumn, fell 6-3 6-3 to Agustin Calleri, of Argentina. He was disappointed by his early exit from a tournament he has won four times. "Obviously it feels empty and sad, but it will be even worse at the Stockholm Open. That will be my very last tournament. "But I won't get any better. And I don't want to end up number 300 in the world, I'd rather finish when I feel that I can still beat some of the very best players." Meanwhile, Slovakia's Hrbaty lost to unseeded Austrian, Markus Hipfl 6-4 6-4. In other first round matches, Spain's third-seeded, Alberto Portas, disposed of Russia's Dimitri Vlasov, while fourth-seeded, Andreas Vinciguerra, of Sweden, beat Argentina's Mariano Hood 6-1 6-4. Defending champion, Magnus Norman, meets Mariano Puerta, also of Argentina, on Tuesday after a month of rest and rehabilitation for a hip injury. |
