Lee, who lost to Tim Henman in the second round of Wimbledon, beat American Glenn Weiner 6-3 3-6 6-2. Defending champion Peter Wessels' attempt to retain the title at the $400,000 grass court event ended with a 6-4 6-1 defeat at the hands of American James Blake. And 1997 champion Sargis Sargsian also lost. He went down 6-3 2-6 6-4 to South African Neville Godwin. Armenian Sargsian, whose 1997 victory is his only ATP tour title win, reached the third round at Wimbledon before losing to Pete Sampras. There was better news for the second seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany, who eliminated the Czech Martin Damm 6-1 6-4. Third seed Davide Sanguinetti also reached the last eight, beating American Cecil Mamiit 7-5 2-6 6-2.
