HAVE YOUR SAY

David Jersey, Channel Islands

Why are West Brom known as the "Baggies"?

Because of the extra long shorts they wore over 100 years ago. There's a team photo of them as FA Cup winners in 1892 which shows shorts designed to meet the top of their socks. Not a knee in sight, and the locals have been calling them Baggies ever since.

Steven Williams, England

Who is the Football League's all-time top scorer?

That record has stood for 37 years. It was set by Arthur Rowley, with a career League total of 434 goals from 1946-65. He got them with four clubs: West Bromwich Albion, Fulham, Leicester City and Shrewsbury Town.

Paul, England

Can you name the first team to win the old League Championship (i.e. Division One) and score more than 100 goals in doing it?

Sunderland were that team, 110 years ago. They won the Championship of season 1892-93 with this record: played 30, won 22, drawn 4, lost 4, goals 100-36, points 48. They finished 11 points clear of runners-up Preston North End.

Chris Pierre, Australia

Did England use any substitutes in their World Cup-winning team in 1966?

The 1966 World Cup was strictly an 11-a-side event with no substitutes allowed. They were first used by England in competitive football in the 1969-70 Home International Championship.

Rob, Sunderland

Which Premiership side has fielded most players aged 30 or over in a match this season?

Bolton had seven over-30s among the 14 players they used when they beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on 11 September.

Luke, Eire

I have been supporting Liverpool for seven years and think they should buy Steve McManaman back from Real. How many caps did he win while he was at Anfield?

Steve has played 37 times for England and won 25 of those caps while he was with Liverpool. He is now aged 30 and his England appearances last season were all as sub in the autumn. Since then it seems to be a case of "out of sight, out of mind" when Sven came to pick his England squads.

Dave, England

A few days after Christmas a few years back, I watched Leyton Orient beat Doncaster Rovers 8-0 at Brisbane Road. Despite the score, Rovers' young goalkeeper played really well. Can you tell me his name and where he is now?

He was 21-year-old Gary Hoggeth and the match was played on 28 December 1997. Behind a dreadful Donny defence, he prevented the score going well into double figures and at the finish was given an ovation by Os fans. Doncaster finished bottom of Division Three and dropped out of the Football League. Hoggeth moved to Bury.

Damien McLaughlin, N.Ireland

Who has scored most goals in World Cup Finals out of Just Fontaine, Pele and Gerd Muller?

Muller just tops that list with 14 goals for Germany, followed by Fontaine with 13 for France and Pele with 12 for Brazil. England's top scorer is Gary Lineker with 10.

Bob Pickett, England

Some Arsenal fans I know claim they have never been relegated from the top division, but I know they have. Can you settle this argument?

Arsenal (then Woolwich Arsenal) finished bottom of the First Division in 1912-13 and were relegated. In the next two seasons they were third and fifth in Division Two. Then League football was suspended because of World War I and it resumed in season 1919-20 with Arsenal restored to Division One.

Ian Hall, England

Can you tell me which teams were in the Premier League when it began?

The Premier League kicked off in season 1992-93 with these 22 clubs: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn, Chelsea, Coventry, Crystal Palace, Everton, Ipswich, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Nottingham Forest, Oldham, QPR, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Tottenham and Wimbledon.
