Phil, Sheffield

How long have players been given caps for international appearances for England?

The Football Association approved the award of caps way back in May 1886. Players get one for each friendly international and once cap for a tournament like the upcoming World Cup.

Richard, Netherlands

When did Newcastle United last win a cup or the Championship?

Newcastle were last crowned champions of England in 1926-27. Their last FA Cup success was in 1955 and they won the European Fairs Cup (now the UEFA Cup) in 1968-69. Their only prize since was the Texaco Cup in 1974 and 1975.

Andy Larner, New Zealand

Did West Ham manager Glenn Roeder ever play for England?

Glenn was never picked for a senior international but he was capped for England B when playing for Leyton Orient and QPR. West Ham have had only nine managers in their history and none of them played for England.

Peter Sisson, Wales

Who were the last away team to get a penalty against Manchester United at Old Trafford? My friend swears it has happened this season.

Your pal is right. Leicester City were awarded a penalty there on 17 November. While Fabien Barthez was indulging in a bit of gamesmanship, kicking a goalpost, Muzzy Izzet put the ball into an empty net. However, the referee ordered him to take the penalty again and he missed.

Simon Fisher, England

In one of your answers a few weeks ago, you said that Wolves were going to be replacing Leicester in the Premiership. A little too soon, eh?

Thanks for reminding me Simon. That'll teach me to count chickens. But I got it right about Leicester being relegated!

Benjamin, Holland

Which team has won the Premiership with the lowest points total?

Manchester United have won the Premiership with both the highest and lowest points totals; 92 in season 1993-94 and 75 in 1996-97. Of the ten Premier League titles, United have won seven, Arsenal two and Blackburn one.

Charles, Dorset

In the FA Cup final, David Seaman pushed the ball around his left-hand post but Chelsea took the corner from the opposite side. Is there some new rule allowing this?

I was at the Millennium Stadium and noticed what you noticed. I checked with my refereeing guru and he says corner kicks should be taken from the side where the ball went out of play. So it looks like a blip by the ref. By the way, goal kicks can be taken from anywhere along the six-yard box, regardless of which side the ball went out.

Tim, UK

If Rushden & Diamonds had won their Third Division play-off final, would they have been the first team to win promotion in their first year as a Football League team?

No, they would not have been the first. The most remarkable first-season promotion was by Peterborough United. They were admitted to the league in 1960 and won the Fourth Division at the first attempt. They did it in record style, scoring 134 goals - still the highest total in any division - and centre-forward Terry Bly gt 52 of them.

Howard Absolom

Did Michael Thomas, of Arsenal and Liverpool, ever play for England?

Yes, he was capped twice as an Arsenal player, against Saudi Arabia (away) in 1988-89 and against Yugoslavia at Wembley 1989-90.

Gary, UK

Who was the last Southampton player to go to the World Cup with England as Wayne Bridge is now?

That was Terry Paine. He was in Alf Ramsey's squad in 1966 and made one appearance in that tournament, in the second match against Mexico.
