Jer Ping, Singapore

How many times have Manchester United broken the British transfer record?

I can think of five such signings: Denis Law from Torino, July 1962, 115,000; Andy Cole from Newcastle, January 1995, 7m; Ruud van Nistelrooy from PSV Eindhoven, April 2001, 19m; Juan Sebastian Veron from Lazio, July 2001, 28.1m; and Rio Ferdinand from Leeds, July 2002, 30m.

Edward, Portsmouth

I see England are opening their European Championship campaign against Macedonia at Southampton on 16 October. Will this be the first full international to be played there?

No, the second. The first was more than 100 years ago - when England beat Ireland 3-0 at Saints' old home, The Dell, on 9 March 1901. Now international football comes to their new HQ, St Mary's, in only its second season.

Sam Francis, UK

Is it true that Brentford won all their home games in one season, and are they the only club to have done so?

Brentford were the fifth and last club with a 100% home record in a League season. They did it (21 matches) in Division Three South in 1929-30. The others with this distinction were all in the old Second Division: Liverpool (14 home matches) in 1893-94; Bury (15 matches) in 1894-95; Sheffield Wednesday (17) in 1899-1900; and Small Heath (before they changed their name to Birmingham) in 1902-02 (17).

Brendan, Warwickshire

Which player started and finished an FA Cup final in goal, did not let in a goal, but ended up on the losing side?

That was Ray Wood, Man United's keeper in the 1957 final. No substitutes in those days. Early in the game, he was carried off with a broken cheekbone. By the end of the match, he was back in goal - after Peter McParland (who had caused Wood's injury) had scored twice for Aston Villa, who won 2-1. Ray died this summer, aged 71.

Neil Thomas, England

Can you explain the transfer window via which, it is reported, Premier League transfers will not soon be permitted?

The transfer window rule, familiar to much of Europe, comes to Britain after 31 August. Premier League clubs will be unable to buy new players until it re-opens in January for three weeks, and again at season's end from May to August.

Lynn McWilliam, England

Who were the three top scorers in the Premiership last season?

Arsenal's Thierry Henry scored most Premiership goals last season (24), followed by three players on 23: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (Chelsea), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Man United) and Alan Shearer (Newcastle).

Phil Roberts, UK

Ian Rush holds the record for most FA Cup goals in modern football (44), but do the statistics include the six goals Denis Law scored in Manchester City's fourth round tie v Luton that was abandoned at 6-2 because of the waterlogged pitch in January 1961?

Goals don't count in abandoned matches that are re-staged, so Denis Law's career total in the FA Cup was 41, second to Ian Rush.

St John, Ireland

Since this summer's World Cup, how many of the competing countries have got or are looking for a new coach or manager?

At the latest count, 18 of this year's 32 World Cup contestants have, or are appointing, new coaches: Belgium, China, Croatia, France, Japan, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Tunisia, Uruguay...and now Brazil, whose World Cup-winning team boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is resigning after this week's match against Paraguay.

Cliff, Edinburgh

How many Premiership managers of a year ago (ie. at the start of last season) are currently out of first-team management?

Five: David O'Leary, Peter Taylor, Jim Smith, Walter Smith and Stuart Gray.

Alex, Sheffield

Browsing the site, I found that halfway through last season you predicted who the top three and bottom three would be in the Premiership, and you ended up being spot on. What are your predictions this time?

Thanks for the reminder, Alex. Shame I didn't back my fancies! Just for fun, let's see if lightning can strike twice with this forecast: Premiership top: 1 Arsenal, 2 Man United, 3 Leeds. And at the other end, Bolton, Birmingham and West Bromwich Albion to go down.
