Phil Rawson, Manchester

When Manchester United were in the Second division in 1974-75, were they still the best supported team in the country?

They certainly were, with an average home League attendance of 48,388. The top average in the First Division that season was Liverpool's 45,966.

Alan, Bolton exile

Who was the last Bolton player capped by England before Michael Ricketts this season?

Ricketts became Bolton's first England cap for 40 years - since Freddy Hill against Northern Ireland in October 1962. At the time Michael was capped against Holland in February, he was reckoned as a "possible" for England's coming World Cup squad, but his club form has since dipped.

George Stannard, South Africa

How come Eduardo Cesar Gaspar has the name "Edu" on his Arsenal shirt when Chelsea's Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was refused permission to have "Jimmy" on his?

"Edu" is recognised as such in the way that fellow-Brazilian Edson Arantes do Nascimento became "pele". The view here was that if Hasselbaink had been allowed to have "Jimmy" on his shirt, every Tom, Dick and Gianluca would have wanted to be identified by his first name.

Tim Murphy, England

Who was the first non-European player to score in the FA Cup Final?

You set me searching half a century back, Tim, and I'm thinking it will have been George Robledo, who headed Newcastle's winner against Arsenal at Wembley in 1952. He was a Chilean international. He earned another Cup-winner's medal a year later, and in four years at St James' Park scored 91 goals for Newcastle.

Chay Bell, England

What is the lowest points total by a team avoiding relegation from the Premiership?

Bradford City enjoyed that escape with 36 points in season 1999-2000. The three relegated teams were Wimbledon (33 points), Sheffield Wednesday (31) and Watford (24). But Bradford went down a year later.

James, UK

In the 1966 World Cup Final, which player wore the number 10 shirt for England? Am I right in thinking it was Martin Peters?

Sorry, James. Pictures show that the player wearing No.10 on the back of his red England shirt on that day of days was hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst.

Steve Pitchforth, England

Did Lee Chapman win a cap for England?

Lee did not play for England in a senior international, but was capped for the u-21 side when with Stoke City and earned England 'B' honours as a Leeds United player.

Phil Harvey, England

When was the first Match of the Day broadcast? Was it in the First Division or the FA Cup and was it a live game?

That TV milestone was in the First Division on Saturday, 22 August, 1964 and screened in highlights on BBC2 (in black and white) at 1800BST. The TV audience was estimated at 20,000 the commentator was Kenneth Wolstenholme and the result was Liverpool 3, Arsenal 2.

Jonny King, England

I noted from previous answers that the transfer deadline was on 28 March. If this is the case, how come Spurs have just signed Jamie Redknapp from Liverpool?

It is perfectly okay to sign players after the deadline but, with the possible exception of a goalkeeper emergency, they cannot be used in the season's remaining matches. Spurs have signed Jamie for next season.

In answer to Harry Niholls (England) and other correspondents regarding my recent reply about Everton becoming in 2002-03 the first English club to play 100 seasons in top-flight League football: This will not be a world record - Celtic and Rangers have been ever-present in Scotland's top division since their league began in 1890-91.
