HAVE YOUR SAY

Chris, England

Who is the youngest player ever to captain England's football team?

Against Paraguay on 17 April, Michael Owen became England's second youngest captain at 22 years, 117 days. The youngest was Bobby Moore, aged 22 years, 47 days when he led England for the first time on 29 May, 1963 (away to Czechoslovakia).

Mikey, England

Didn't Millwall sign Dion Dublin on loan from Aston Villa after the transfer deadline, and if so how was he eligible to play in their play-off semi-final?

Millwall signed Dublin on transfer deadline day itself (28 March) on loan for the rest of the season, so it was perfectly in order for him to appear in the play-offs.

Chris Stock, England

Has any English team, apart from Preston North End in 1888-89, gone through a season undefeated in the League?

In achieving that feat in the League's first season, Preston had to play only 22 matches. They share the record with Liverpool, who were unbeaten in their 28 Second Division games in season 1893-94.

Tony, Bristol

Aston Villa used 14 players, I think, to win the League Championship in 1980-81. Is this a record?

Yes, a record Villa share with Liverpool. They, too, used only 14 players to win the League title in 1965-66. And now that football has become a squad game, it's a record that will never be beaten.

Rob, England

Why do linesmen have different-coloured flags?

Purely for identification - as a help to the media and the clubs when they have reason to mention a particular linesman (now "assistant referee") in any report.

Johnny Horth, UK

Why don't teams get relegated from the Scottish Third Division?

Because there's nowhere for them to go. There is no feeder system into the Scottish League in the way that the Conference Champions move up into the Football League, subject to their ground being up to the required standard.

Chris Evans, UK

Did Alan Smith, Arsenal's centre-forward in the late 80s and early 90s, ever win and England cap, and if so how many goals did he score?

Alan smith was capped 13 times between 1989 and 1992 and scored two goals for England - in a 3-1 win against USSR and 1-0 against Turkey.

Mike, Liverpool

I've seen some pictures of pitches way back in the 1930s when there was no "D" marking on the edge of the penalty-area. When and why was it introduced?

The arc has been a pitch marking since 1938. Its purpose is to ensure that when a penalty is being taken all players, apart from the kicker, are the required ten yards from the spot and behind the ball.

Kenrick Christopher, England

Has League football ever been played in my home town of Dorchester?

Yes, it happened this season. Bournemouth used Dorchester's ground for their first nine home games while the 5.5m refit at Dean Court was being completed.

John, London

I have a bet on whether players get paid for international matches, and I think they do...am I right?

England players get what the FA call a "nominal" fee for international appearances. They won't be specific, but I can tell you it is at least 1,000 a matchand there are bonuses for winning world Cup games.
