HAVE YOUR SAY

Jamie, Middlesbrough

Who is the oldest player to score in a full international for England?

That distinction belongs to the late Sir Stanley Matthews, and it's hard to imagine it will ever be beaten. He was aged 41 years and 248 days when he scored against Northern Ireland in Belfast on 6 October 1956.

Glenn, Southall, UK

I was a youngster when Barrow FC were demoted from the Football League. When was that, and what were the circumstances?

Barrow dropped out of the Football League in 1972 after finishing third from bottom of Division Four. In those days, the bottom four clubs had to apply for re-election.

Barrow were voted out and replaced by Hereford United from the Southern League, who got nine votes more than Barrow.

Tony, Cornwall

I know Chelsea are your team, so what chance do you give them of winning the Premiership this season?

No chance, based on their 'pedigree' of just one Championship since 1955. But they are always capable of a cup run.

Luke Thompson, UK

I'm sure Kevin Nolan scored the first Premiership goal last season, for Bolton away to Leicester. Please tell my disbelieving friends I'm right.

Correct, Luke. Kevin scored twice in Bolton's 5-0 win on opening day last year (18 August), the first after 15 minutes.

James Magee, England

Which clubs has Damien Duff played for so far in his career?

Terrific winger, Damien! Blackburn are his only club - 192 first-team appearances over seven seasons (24 goals)...plus 30 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

Will Blackburn be able to keep him against big offers that can be expected when the transfer window (which closes on 31 August) re-opens on 1 January?

Matthew, England

Which players could make the biggest impact on the Premiership this season?

Of the many youngsters on the way up, I reckon three Js could make a real mark this season: Jermaine Pennant (Arsenal, midfield), Jermaine Jenas (Newcastle, midfield) and West Ham's attacking diamond Jermain Defoe.

Matthew Doherty, England

I run a kids' page in our local team's programme and wonder how to find out footballers' birthdays. Any ideas?

'The Footballers' Who's Who 2002-2003 has career details, including birthdates, of virtually every player who appeared in the Premiership and Nationwide League last season. It is published by Queen Anne Press.

Al Dunsmuir, UK

Can a club recall a player who is loaned out on a one-year deal? I'm worried that Juventus might want Fabien Carini back from Arsenal if Italy's Gianluigi Buffon gets injured.

Depends on the contract agreement between the clubs. In such deals involving League clubs in England, it is not unusual for on-loan goalkeepers to be recalled in times of injury.

Derek W Jones, Canada

I have been an Aston Villa fan for 55 years, and attended the 1975 League Cup final against Norwich at Wembley. I remember Villa won, but can you fill in some of the details, please?

That final was played on 1 March 1975, and a crowd of 100,000 saw Villa win by the only goal, scored by Ray Graydon. The winning team was: Cumbes, Robson, Aitken, Ross, Nicholl, McDonald, Graydon, Little, Leonard, Hamilton, Carrodus. Happy memories of 27 years ago, eh Derek?

Soji Olu, Manchester

Who were the top-scoring midfielders in the Barclaycard Premiership last season?

The two top scorers of Premiership goals among midfield players in 2001-02 were Freddie Ljungberg with 12 for Arsenal and David Beckham with 11 (one penalty) for Manchester United.
