| Royal Ascot: Day five racewatch All the action from the final day of the Royal Ascot meeting, including the big race of the card, the Golden Jubilee Stakes. 1730 BST Queen's Alexandra Stakes (2m 6f) 1. Cover Up 11-4f Distance: Nk, nk Cover Up wins the last race of the day, which provides a thrilling finish to round off this year's Royal Ascot in style. Kieren Fallon's mount is going well turning into the home straight of the marathon race but looks as if he cannot get a clear run. But Fallon switches the five-year-old to the inside and just overhauls Archduke Ferdinand on the line. 1655 BST Sandringham Rated Stakes (1m) 1. Tashawak 12-1 Distance: 2, 1, Yet another tight finish as Richard Hills gets his first winner of the week with joint top weight Tashawak. A stewards' inquiry is announced but the first two horses are not involved and in any case, the result stands. 1620 BST Wokingham Stakes (6f) 1. Capricho 20-1 Distance: 1, The first grey winner of the meeting comes in the form of Capricho, who wins the Wokingham Stakes, traditionally one of the big betting heats of the meeting. Despite being drawn in stall 21, Richard Quinn guides Capricho to the stands side and it is a tactic that pays off as all of the placed horses come from that side. For trainer Jon Akehurst, it is a first winner not just at Royal Ascot but at any Ascot Flat meeting. Border Subject also runs well to come second under top weight. 1545 BST Golden Jubilee Stakes (6f) 1. Malhub 16-1 Distance: 1, Kevin Darley's day is getting better and better as he completes an 84-1 double on Malhub, trained by John Gosden. Malhub was always among the front runners with Danehurst making up a lot of ground in the second half to come second on his first run of the season. Johannesburg, who had expected to go off a very strong favourite, drifted in the market before the race and the punters were right to be cautious as the former champion juvenile comes home well back in the field. 1505 BST Hardwicke Stakes (6f) 1. Zindabad 4-1 Distance: 1, S hd The second race of the day sees another tight finish with Zindabad holding out for victory. Gold Cup-winning trainer Mark Johnston has now won the Hardwicke Stakes for the third time in four years and his fourth win of the week takes him to the top of the 2002 Royal Ascot trainers' table. It was a bold front-running performance from Zindabad, who hung on bravely in the final stages to give Kevin Darley his second winner of the meeting. Darley had just missed out in the first race, being beaten on Luvah Girl by a head. 1430 BST Henry Carnavon Stakes (6f) 1. Duty Paid 11-1 Distance: Hd, hd Duty Paid wins the opening race on the card by a whisker from Luvah Girl and Pearl Dance. Richard Quinn is in the saddle on Duty Paid, who is owned by Jeff Smith, who also owns popular veteran Persian Punch. It is Quinn's second win of the Royal meeting although it is slightly marred when he picks up a three-day whip ban. It is trainer David Elsworth's first winner of the 2002 meeting. |
