A stewards' inquiry was called - with the winner not affected - but the placings remained unaltered.

Despite going off as a 4-5 favourite Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he was not convinced Rock of Gibraltar, who has also won both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas, would win.

"I can't say I was apprehensive today, more hopeful because it was a good field," he said.

"And I think the Guineas form has held up so I'm very, very pleased.

"What it shows you is that he can travel in any ground and that's important - soft ground, good ground or good to firm as it was in the Gimcrack - that and his determination."

Great release

Ferguson also confirmed that he will retain a share in the colt when he eventually goes to stud.

"It's a great release for me and it can't get better than five Group Ones in a row," he added.

Winning jockey Mick Kinane joined in the tributes to the horse.

"He's very dependable. You can set your watch by him," said Kinane.

O'Brien and Kinane were celebrating on the double when Statue of Liberty took the following race, the Coventry Stakes.

Kinane opted for the son of Storm Cat over fellow Ballydoyle competitor Sparticus and his decision proved to be the right one as he held off Pakhoes to win by a neck.

Statue Of Liberty is already quoted at 20-1 by Paddy Power for next year's 2000 Guineas.
