| Royal Ascot: Day three All the action from day three of the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting. 1730 Britannia Handicap (1m) 1. Pentecost 25-1 Distance: Nk, nk, nk Pentecost brings Ian Balding his first Royal Ascot winner since 1994 and rounds off another good day for the bookmakers - not one favourite has won. Run over the straight mile course, the horses split into two packs with Pentecost, ridden by Liam Keniry, on the near side just holding off Ghannam on the far side. The Queen's horse, Green Line, was sent off as the favourite but finished down the large field. 1655 BST Hampton Court Stakes (1m 2f) 1. Burning Sun 14-1 Distance: 1, hd Trainer Henry Cecil, the most successful ever trainer at Royal Ascot, gets his 70th winner - and his first at this year's meeting - with Burning Sun, who has never won a race before. Richard Quinn was on board and held off the final furlong challenge of both Izdiham and Common World. 1620 BST King George V Stakes (1m 4f) 1. Systematic 9-1 Distance: Nk, hd, Systematic gives Gold Cup-winning trainer Mark Johnston his second win in a row, a 169-1 double. Systematic was always handy, hit the front at the furlong marker and then just hung on as Highest, under Johnny Murtagh, and Leadership, ridden by Richard Hughes, pushed him all the way to the line. It was Kevin Darley's first winner of the 2002 meeting. Both second and third home were trained by Sir Michael Stoute. 1545 BST Gold Cup (2m 4f) 1. Royal Rebel 16-1 Distance: Nk, 1 Royal Rebel retains his title after a fascinating battle to the line with Vinnie Roe and Wareed. The six-year-old, once again ridden by Johnny Murtagh, had not won a race since his success last year but was always near the head of the field and moved to the front when long-time leader Persian Punch faded in the closing stages. With half-a-furlong to go, Royal Rebel, Wareed and Vinnie Roe were in a line but Wareed ran out of puff while Vinnie Roe could not overhaul Royal Rebel. It is a third Gold Cup success for trainer Mark Johnston and Johnny Murtagh's third win in four seasons. 1505 BST Norfolk Stakes (5f) 1. Baron's Pit 12-1 Distance: Hd, 3 Another good result for the bookmakers as Aidan O'Brien's odds-on favourite Marino Marini is beaten. Baron's Pit, trained by Richard Hannon, just held off The Bonus King as the two battled hard to the line. It was jockey Richard Hughes' second win of the meeting. Marino Marini, who spread a plate before the race causing a slight delay, was disappointing in third. 1430 BST Ribblesdale Stakes (1m 4f) 1. Irresistible Jewel 12-1 Distance: , It is a good start to the day for Ireland with the Dermot Weld-trained Irresistible Jewel coming from a long way back to snatch victory. The filly's win means a first Royal Ascot winner for jockey Pat Smullen. Shadow Dancing, who was jointly bred by the late Major Dick Hern and former jockey Willie Carson, was second. Favourite Zafaraniya finished down the field. |
