Pat Eddery has become the second most successful Flat jockey ever in Britain with his 4,494th winner.

After drawing level with Lester Piggott's tally at Royal Ascot earlier in the week, Eddery overtook Old Stoneface at Goodwood on Friday night.

The Irishman rode Alan Jarvis-trained Lady Pahia to victory in the Mortarmill Organic Dairy Fillies' Stakes.

Only Sir Gordon Richards now lies in front of the 11-time champion jockey on 4,870 wins.

Eddery equalled Lester Piggott's haul of 4,493 winners with victory on Romantic Liason in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Eddery, who rode his first winner in the UK in 1969, is now aiming for Richards' record.

"I've got a long way to go for that but we'll see how we go," said Eddery after his comfortable victory at Royal Ascot.

Romantic Liason, who had only had one previous start, on the all-weather at Lingfield, was an unexpected win for the 11-time champion jockey, coming home at 16-1.

The win was also Eddery's 73rd win at Royal Ascot, his first coming 33 years ago.

"Lester will be chuffed for me - we have been good friends for a long time," added the 50-year-old.

"This has been my target for a couple of years.

"Two years ago I thought I could do it as I had good stables to ride for - it has been a struggle but I got there.

"I'm not bothered if people keep asking how long I will go on - I am still enjoying it, I am very happy riding winners and I will carry on as long as I feel all right."
