Boreal claims Coronation glory
Boreal is clear at the finishing line
Boreal is clear at the finishing line
German raider Boreal held off a challenge from Storming Home to win the Coronation Cup at Epsom.

The 4-1 chance, with Kieren Fallon on board, took up the running in the final two furlings and Storming Home could not compete for pace as he headed clear.

It marked the first Group One prize in England for Germany since Star Appeal's success in the Eclipse Stakes in 1975.

Fallon was celebrating his second Coronation Cup victory in three years, following his success aboard the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Daliapour in 2000.

To win in England is fantastic and to win a Group One is even better

Long-time leader Zindabad, the oldest horse in the field at six years old, finished third.

But favourite, Kutub, ridden by Frankie Dettori, came last and there was clearly something wrong with the horse.

Godolphin's second-string horse Marienbard was fourth.

Only six horses ran in the soft conditions at a wet Epsom, which clearly favoured the German horse.

Winning trainer Peter Schiergen, a former five-times champion jockey in Germany who started training four years ago, was saddling only his second runner in Britain.

The 37-year-old, whose Sumitas had finished second to Dubai Millennium at Royal Ascot, believes Boreal can go on to further success,

"I think we'll go for the King George next, if you look at his pedigree he is a horse who will always improve," he said.

Fallon added: "He's a very good horse and I was always very confident."

Result
1. Boreal 4-1
2. Storming Home 7-2
3. Zindabad 9-1.
6 ran.

Distance: 3, 6.
