High Chaparral defeated stablemate Hawk Wing to give Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien a one-two and his second consecutive win in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom.

Jockey Mick Kinane had the choice of the two runners, but picked Hawk Wing, who was sent off the 9-4 favourite.

But the Johnny Murtagh-ridden High Chaparral, who drifted in the market to 7-2, proved to have the superior stamina and won by two lengths.

Long-time leader Moon Ballad (20-1) finished another 12 lengths back in third.

The race was marred by the death of Coshocton, who was put down after fracturing a leg and falling to the ground in the final furlong.

The gallant 100-1 outsider Jelani was a length behind Moon Ballad in fourth.

Fight Your Corner fared the better of Mark Johnston's highly-touted pair in fifth, three places ahead of stablemate Bandari.

But Frankie Dettori's Derby jinx continued as he finished seventh on Naheef in the only big race to have eluded him.

O'Brien won the 2001 race with Galileo, while it was Murtagh's second victory following his triumph on Sinndar in 2000.

Murtagh was glad to have been aboard O'Brien's so-called second string.

"Mick got lucky a couple of years ago so he probably knows how I feel now. I feel over the moon," he said.

"A lot of people say it's not the race it once was but it's the race that everyone wants to win.

"When Mick came through there was only going to be one winner. He ran his heart out. He is a very special horse."

O'Brien added: "In the last half a furlong I really didn't know who would win. They both ran great races and we were really happy with both horses."
