Kazzia wins the Oaks
Kazzia holds off the challenge of Quarter Moon in the Oaks
Kazzia holds off the challenge of Quarter Moon
Oaks result:1 Kazzia 100-30f; 2 Quarter Moon 15-2; 3 Shadow Dancing 14-1.
(Dist: , 14. 14 ran.)

Frankie Dettori claimed a thrilling all-the-way success and completed a rare Classic double as favourite Kazzia headed off Quarter Moon to win the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom.

The Sagitta 1,000 Guineas winner Kazzia is the first filly since Salsabil in 1990 to complete the Guineas-Oaks double.

She gamely led all the way in rain-softened ground, shrugging off a closing challenge from Quarter Moon for a half-length win, with Shadow Dancing 14 lengths back in third.

I thought 'let them come and beat the champion and see what happens'
Frankie Dettori

Kazzia now looks set to bid for the fillies' Triple Crown by running in the St Leger at Doncaster in September.

Only two horses since the war, Oh So Sharp (1985) and Meld (1955) have achieved that treble.

It was a third victory in the Epsom fillies' Classic for Dettori, who rode a shrewd race on the horse trained by Saeed bin Suroor for Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team.

Afterwards Dettori, who also won on Balanchine in 1994 and Moon Shell a year later, praised his mount.

"She was very tough. I was going to give anyone a fight today if they wanted to beat me," said the jockey, who performed his trademark flying dismount in the winner's enclosure.

"We were full of confidence before the race. We knew she liked soft ground."

Bin Suroor told BBC Sport: "This year she showed in Dubai that she had class so we decided to run her in the Guineas.

"Then after that we felt that this filly she can get the distance and handle the softer ground. For that I had confidence before the race.

"Thankfully she stayed and Frankie looked after her very well in the race."
