| Your Derby verdict High Chaparral's victory in the Vodafone Derby on Saturday gave trainer Aidan O'Brien his second consecutive win in the race. Send your congratulations to the winning team. The Irish trainer won his first Derby at Epsom in 2001 when Galileo triumphed. This year, O'Brien clocked up a one-two with High Chaparral and runner-up Hawk Wing. Moon Ballad, who led for much of the race, finished in third place. The race was marred by the death of Coshocton, who had to be put down after falling in the latter stages of the race. Was High Chaparral a worthy winner? This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. This is from a gambling point of view. High Caparral and Hawk Wing are two very high class colts but the poor punters were completely bamboozled as to which horse to back. Aidan O'Brien was only concerned with winning the Derby - it didn't really matter which one. There was confusion all day about the going, stamina doubts, etc. If he was restricted to one entry then the choice would have been easy, albeit the one left in would have been odds on. Similar confusion reigned in the 2000 Guineas when O'Brien had the first two home in Rock Of Gibralter and Hawkwing. Martin Pipe does the same thing - at Cheltenham I had Lady Cricket/McCoy and was done on the line by his 25/1 outsider. Give us a break. Katy O'Halloran I would just to express my congratulations to the winning connections of High Chapparal. Also sincere condolences to all connected with Coshocton. Horses will break legs, shoulders etc - Mother nature didn't have a particularly good idea when she made their legs so thin compared to the weight carried on top. All that racing can do is make it as safe as possible for them. It could happen to any horse any time but in such a public arena it brings in home how precious they are.
I watched my horse break a leg playing in his paddock. It is absolutely heartbreaking but can happen at any time to any horse. My deepest sympathies to all connections. On the race itself - not as exciting as last year but still a great spectacle. Caroline, UK Great race, but I think questions need to be asked. Not only did Coshocton, break a leg and lose his life, but we now see Fight Your Corner has also had to have major surgery to have his leg pinned. Some of those horses still had baby fluff in their tails! Only the most mature 3 year olds should be put through this type of endurance. If anyone had seen the state Coshocton was in at the start it was obvious he had already taken too much out of himself and the poor chap ran his heart out. I am a keen racegoer and enjoyed watching the Derby. However - I saw a horse pushed beyond when a human would have cried enough. To me this can only be done by the fear of the whip. Ban it! I have heard all the arguments for it, ie "it keeps me balanced"etc. Just take the whip out of the game. Jockeys would still be on a level playing field and Carshocton might still be alive.
Flat racing is becoming uncompetitive with Ballydoyle and Godolphin dominating the big races, as in the Oaks and Derby, but High Chapparal's win was a good one. I don't believe the renewals were substandard - Kazzia is proving to be as good as Oh So Sharp at the moment. It is simply the two-team dominance that is watering down Flat racing. The death of the beautiful colt Coshocton was horrific, especially being right near the scene. My thoughts are with his connections and Philip Robinson, who is thankfully alright now. "That's what horses are bred for...our pleasure"... Willie Carson's comments about Coshocton's horrific fall were unforgiveable. An excellent race and, in the conditions, a worthy winner in High Chaparral. On soft ground and over this distance, the offspring of Sadler's Wells and Daarshan mares are hard to beat indeed. Awesome win by High Chaparral! Thought Hawk Wing would catch him with a few lengths to go but no chance! It was a fine race comparable to any from recent years, but for me it will be overshadowed by the death of the beautiful Coshocton.
The Ballydoyle express marches relentlessly on. I don't believe the better of the two won the race and the ground was on the slow side of good. High Chapparal is a very good each-way bet for the Arc and I believe Hawk Wing is a shoe-in for the Breeders' Cup. Congrats to Aidan O'Brien - another excellent showing - proving once again that the Irish are kings of the Flat. The glory days of the Epsom Derby are now firmly behind us. The horses are running just for the prize money. The standard of this year's Oaks and Derby left a lot to be desired and both races were won by sub-standard animals. Oh for the glory days of Mill Reef, Nijinsky, Shergar, Reference Point - those were racehorses! |
