Ulster hurling semi ends in draw

Guinness Ulster Hurling semi-final:
Derry 1-9 0-12 Down

A Jerome Trainor point three minutes into injury-time earned Down a deserved draw against holders Derry in Saturday's Guinness Ulster Hurling semi-final.

Two tremendous Oliver Collins points from sidelines cuts had looked set to earn Derry a last-gasp victory.

However while the match officials had only signalled two minutes of injury-time, Trainor managed to grab the equalising score in the third minute of added time.

A draw was probably a fair result as Down insisted that a second half point by Derry goal-scorer John O'Dwyer had actually gone wide.

The Mourne County made the better start to lead 0-3 to 0-1 after the opening quarter.

Jimmy O'Reilly's team should have been even further ahead at that stage having shot several wides and having two goal-bound efforts cleared off the Derry line.

But John O'Dwyer then put Derry ahead by hitting a 24th minute goal after a long ball by Ronan McCloskey had been misjudged by Liam Clarke.

With Gerard McGrattan in excellent form at right half-forward for Down, the Mourne county recovered to lead 0-7 to 1-3 at the interval.

The third quarter produced only two Down points and a Derry score which left the Mourne county two ahead with 15 minutes left.

However helped by Collins' two successive scores from the sideline, Derry then stole into the lead before Trainor's late effort ensured the replay on Saturday at the same venue (1500 BST).
