Latest news from the Cisco World Match Play Championship at Wentworth
Semi-final scores
  • Garcia bt Campbell 2&1
  • Els bt Singh 3&2

Spain's Sergio Garcia reached his first World Match Play Championship final after chipping in at the 35th hole for a 2&1 victory over New Zealand's Michael Campbell.

The 22-year-old will meet three-times winner Ernie Els in Sunday's final after the world number three beat struggling Fijian Vijay Singh 3&2.

South African Els won an unprecedented three successive World Match Play titles between 1994 and 1996, and then lost by one hole to Singh in the 1997 final.

    Major incidents as they happened:

1735: Garcia will be joined in the final by Ernie Els, who shares a half point with Singh at the 16th to complete a 3&2 win.

1729: Garcia reaches the final of the World Match Play Championship with a superb chip shot to seal a 2&1 victory over Michael Campbell.

1717: Garcia regains his two hole lead with a birdie at the 16th. Campbell must now win both holes to have any chance of making Sunday's final.

1716: Singh and Els share the 15th to leave the South African three up with three to play and one hole away from victory.

1707: Campbell wins the 15th hole with an easy putt, narrowing Garcia's lead to just one shot with three holes to play.

1705: Singh makes par at the 14th for the halve point but remains three holes behind Els.

1656: A magnificent hole by Els, who recovers from a poor tee-off with a superb shot from the rough to set up a birdie and regain his three hole lead.

1651: Campbell's par on the 14th is enough to halve the hole with Garcia, who leads by two.

1646: Singh's mini-revival continues as he battles back to two holes behind Els. The South African lands in trees with his first shot and can only make the rough with his second in an unusually sloppy round.

1644: Garcia clinches the 13th - only the second hole of the day he has won - to take a two hole lead over Campbell with five holes to play.

1632: Singh wins the 11th hole in four thanks to some untidy play by Els. But the Fijian still has a mountain to climb as he trails Els by three.

1629: Campbell begins the 12th by teeing-off into the woods, and eventually concedes the hole to Garcia, who comes close with an eagle putt. Garcia now leads by one hole - the first time the Spaniard has led in this semi-final.

1622: Els maintains his four hole lead over Singh with both players sharing par and a half point at the tenth.

1616: Campbell recovers from a wayward second shot on the 11th to make par and scrape a half point against Garcia.

1611: Singh gets the half point with a par four on ninth, to stay four points behind Els.

1604: Garcia misses the chance to lead for the first time in this match with an over-hit long putt at the 10th. Both players par the hole as the match remains all square.

1558: Singh recovers from a weak tee-shot off the eight with a magnificent putt for a birdie three. It is the first hole Singh has won in this afternoon session and it sees Els' lead reduced to four.

1555: The semi-final between Campbell and Garcia remains all square as both players make a par four at the ninth.

1550: Singh's poor luck continues as he narrowly misses another putt at the seventh and is again forced to settle for a half point.

1542: Campbell concedes the eighth to Garcia following a miserable round which includes a five minute delay while officials search for the New Zealander's ball in the rough.

1535: Els scrapes a half point at the sixth to maintain his five hole advantage after Singh misses a straightforward birdie putt.

1532: Campbell stays one up against Garcia as the pair par the seventh and share the half point.

1525: Singh's miserable round continues as Els wins the fifth hole in two with a magical putt from the bunker. The South African is now five up with 23 holes played.

1519: Campbell goes one ahead of Garcia thanks to an exquisite second shot on to the green at the sixth and his second birdie of the afternoon session.

1514: Singh comes close to winning the fourth but his 12 foot putt rolls unluckily over the edge of the hole and he is forced to share the points with Els.

1509: Two poor chips by Campbell and Garcia with their second shots on the fifth lead to another shared hole.

1503: Singh misses the chance to narrow Els' lead to three with another miss-hit birdie putt.

1500: Garcia tees off the fourth into the bunker, allowing Campbell the chance for an eagle. The New Zealander misses and Garcia recovers with a superb bunker shot. Both players then make birdies to halve the hole.

1449: Singh and Els make par to halve the 20th.

1443: Both Campbell and Garcia make par on the 447 yard third as the scores remain all square.

1442: Els produces a superb putt on the opening hole of the afternoon session to extend his lead to four.

    Fiji's Vijay Singh

1425: Garcia bogeys the first hole of the afternoon session to fall one hole behind Campbell. But Garcia bounces back immediately to claim the second hole and level the match.

1357: Singh and Garcia both birdie the 18th to halve the hole. Els goes into the break three holes up.

1340: Singh misses an easy putt at the 571 yard 17th to drop another hole and fall three behind Els.

1331: Garcia's spectacular second shot sets up an eagle chance, but he pulls his putt just short. Campbell halves the hole with a birdie as both players head for lunch all square with 18 holes played.
