On-song Els sinks Monty
Colin Montgomerie congratulates Ernie Els
Montgomerie congratulates Els on a fine display
Ernie Els produced near-perfect golf on Friday to put Colin Montgomerie out of the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth.

The Scot struggled manfully to stay with Els, but the world number three was simply irresistible and ran out a 6&5 winner.

Vijay Singh was another to enjoy a relatively straightforward quarter-final victory. The big-hitting Fijian beat world number four Retief Goosen 4&3.

Michael Campbell, fresh from beating Nick Faldo at a seventh extra hole, accounted for Ian Woosnam 3&2.

And Sergio Garcia became the last man to reach the semi-finals when he dispatched Padraig Harrington 2&1.

Els fired an approximate 60 - a Championship record - over the first 18 holes to take a hold over his match with Montgomerie that he never relinquished.

The Ryder Cup hero did not play too badly himself, but he had no answer for the barrage of birdies coming from the 2002 Open champion's putter.

Fiji's Vijay Singh at Wentworth
Singh's approach play was flawless
Next up for Els is world number eight Singh. The amiable Fijian was in sensational form all day, and Goosen did well to stay in touch.

Singh's accurate approach work and solid putting was the key to his success, and he will go into Saturday's semi-finals in a confident mood.

The first man to reach the last four was Campbell, despite having to finish his marathon first-round match with Faldo this morning.

The New Zealander got out to quick start against defending champion Woosnam.

The 44-year-old Welshman did threaten to stage a comeback after the lunch break, but Campbell raised his game again to seal the victory on the 16th green.

Campbell's semi-final opponent is Garcia, who came through a see-saw battle with his Ryder Cup team-mate Harrington.

The 22-year-old Spaniard had trailed by four early on but took advantage of some ragged play from the Dubliner in the afternoon.

Harrington suggested a fightback by winning the 15th and 16th holes, but a terrible drive at the par-five 17th handed Garcia the hole and the match.
