Barlow moves clear
Peter Lonard
Lonard moved into a tie for second place

Craig Barlow fired a six-under-par 65 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Air Canada Championship.

Barlow climbed to 10 under in Surrey, British Columbia, ahead of Australia's Robert Allenby (62) and Peter Lonard (67), and fellow American David Gossett (66).

One shot further back was the American trio of Gene Sauers (65), Kevin Sutherland (67) and Steve Lowery (67).

Barlow began the second day at Northview Golf and Country Club in a tie for sixth.

But he compiled an outward 33 before stringing together three straight birdies after the turn on the way home in 32.

The 30-year-old, who led following the third round of The International earlier this month, had shoulder and hip operations in the close-season.

Robert Allenby
Allenby fired 62 but missed out on the lead
Since then he has missed the cut in eight of 15 tournaments this season and is without a win in 125 starts on the US Tour.

"It's been frustrating but I promised myself through this whole thing that I was going to be patient," he said.

"It's hard to perform against the best golfers in the world when your body is not allowing you to do it."

Barlow faded to seventh at The International, his best finish of the season.

His career-best result is a tie for third at the 1999 Buick Challenge.

"I knew it was going to be a long road and I just tried to stay patient and trust in my abilities," he said.

"I'm starting to see the result of that. It was good to hit shots today. I was in a rhythm and the putter was working pretty good."

Sweden's former Ryder Cup star Per-Ulrik Johansson was the top-placed European in a tie for 19th on five under, alongside first-round leader David Frost (72).
