| Sunday, 1 September, 2002, 14:52 GMT 15:52 UK Bjorn wins in Munich ![]() Bjorn first won this title two years ago Denmark's Thomas Bjorn won the BMW International Open in Munich by four shots on Sunday. Bjorn carded a final-round 66 for a 24-under-par total to regain the title he won two years ago. Germany's Bernhard Langer and England's John Bickerton finished tied for second place.
Bjorn had started the final day's play two clear of Langer, with whom he had been paired for all four days of the tournament. His good form continued into the final round as enjoyed his best front nine of the tournament, carding birdies on the third, fifth, sixth and ninth holes. A rare bogey at the 10th closed the gap to the chasing field, but birdies at the 11th, 12th and 18th were enough for the Dane to secure victory. Langer matched Bjorn with four birdies over the front nine but endured two dropped shots - on the eighth and 11th holes - to fall three strokes off the lead. The German was never able to get within striking distance of his playing partner again, finishing with a four-under-par 68. Sunday's second-place finish was the fourth time that Langer has finished runner-up in Munich - the only PGA tournament played on home soil he has failed to win. Daly's defence Europe's Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance will be delighted that two of his main men are in form - and there is every chance Bjorn and Langer could play together at The Belfry next month. "I think Sam (Torrance) will be very happy after this," said Bjorn. "This was good for our competitive spirit, going out head-to-head with Bernhard. "Neither of us had given of our best for a time and this was just the sort of sensation we're going to get next month, playing under the utmost pressure." Langer said: "It's how you play in four weeks' time that counts but there's no doubt that playing better nearer the match gives you more confidence." Defending champion John Daly was unable to repeat his record-equalling form of last year. The big-hitting American's 14-under total of 274 was 13 shots worse than his 2001 score.
