| Bangor 1-0 Sartid ![]() Bangor enjoyed themselves at the Racecourse Ground Bangor City made a giant step towards the first round of the Uefa Cup on Thursday night after beating FK Sartid at the Racecourse Ground. Paul Roberts rose to the big occasion against the Yugoslavian visitors by scoring the only goal of the night, putting Bangor in the driving seat for the second leg of this Uefa Cup qualifying round in a fortnight. Before the match, Bangor manager Peter Davenport had said that this could be the season that striker Roberts comes of age. "It's a fantastic night, the players were absolutely tremendous," Davenport said.
"Every single one of them played their part and I can't praise them highly enough - they were just tremendous all night. "Paul will work all day for you and he worked his socks off tonight. He got a bit of cramp at the end and had to come off but he scored a great goal and we've got a chance now in the second leg." Roberts certainly showed his class in the 69th minute with a sweetly taken left-foot shot that was rifled low into the corner of the Sartid net. But more than anything it was the League of Wales side's defensive properties that earned them this win, with the men in blue harrying their opponents and allowing Sartid little time on the ball. Former Manchester United player Clayton Blackmore added his huge experience to the mix, which became even more important when fellow midfielder Gareth Williams limped off early in the first half. Phil Priestley was a tower of strength in the Bangor goal and produced one flying save to his right to deny Slavolijub Kizic within the first minute. But after that chances were few for the visitors, who were reduced to speculative long shots before emerging for the second half with renewed purpose. Bangor kept a collective cool head as the pressure built, while the Sartid players snatched at the few chances they created. Then a piercing through ball from Blackmore caught the Sartid defence too square, aallowing Kenny Burgess to lay the ball back for Roberts to fire home past Dragan Zilic.
