Bangor manager Peter Davenport has called for his team to rise to the challenge of playing poweful Yugoslavian side FK Sartid in the Uefa Cup first qualifying round.

Sartid finished third in their national league last season, behind giants Partizan Belgrade and Crveda Zvezda (formerly Red Star Belgrade), and knocked out Dundee in last season's Intertoto Cup.

Bangor, meanwhile, have lost striker Marc Lloyd-Williams - last season's top scorer in the League of Wales and runner-up in Europe's Golden Shoe table of goal scorers - to Nationwide Conference side Southport.

Davenport is also concerned that because of the League of Wales season structure they have not yet had any competitive matches, while Sartid's season is already underway.

"Ideally I would have liked the match a month into the season," Davenport said.

"They will be better prepared than us but I think we're in pretty good shape.

"We've tried to replace Marc - he's a diificult man to follow - but Paul Roberts, who played up front with Marc last season, has looked very, very sharp.

"This could be the season when he blossoms."

Bangor will play at Wrexham's larger Racecourse Ground for the first leg before heading for the return in Yugoslavia in two weeks' time

"If we can keep it tight over here then we have a chance in the second leg, but from the looks of things they're top quality," Davenport added.

"They've got international players in their ranks and they are no mugs."
