But the national manager and his captain-in-waiting have held clear-the-air talks ahead of this weekend's Euro 2004 qualifier in the Faroe Islands. Vogts was critical of Ferguson and midfield partner Paul Lambert for not talking to one another enough during what was only their second game in the same side. And Ferguson told Rangers News: "I have to admit I wasn't happy when I saw the quotes.
"I fully admit I didn't play my best game, but you can't be man of the match every time and I wasn't the only one who didn't reach the level we all wanted. "However, I spoke on the phone with Berti and we got the whole thing cleared up." Aberdeen Football Club had previously formally complained to the Scottish Football Association about Vogts' criticism of their young midfielder, Kevin McNaughton, after the 1-0 defeat by Denmark. Scotland drew 1-1 with the Faroe Islands on their last visit there, in a Euro 2000 qualifier in 1999. And Vogts is under pressure to record a win against one of Europe's minnows after an unprecedented five defeats in a row under the new national manager. Yet Ferguson, who is expected to shake off an injury in time to play on Saturday, remains full of confidence. "I feel sure that, although we will have a young squad in action on Saturday, we can get the job done," he said. |
