It was a massive turnaround, especially for Christian Dailly, from the 2-2 draw in the Faroe Islands.

Scotland boss Vogts told BBC Scotland: "The whole team played well, but there were also a lot of good wishes for Christian Dailly."

The West Ham United defender had been heavily criticised for the goals lost to their part-time opponents in the opening match of the Euro 2004 campaign.

Criticism attributed to Vogts led to Weir effectively ending his international career following the Faroes nightmare.

Ironically, Weir's fellow Everton defender, Gary Naysmith, produced a clinical finish for the second goal in Reykjavik.

"It was a brilliant game for my team and they did well this afternoon and are now back in the competition," said Vogts.

"All things went well in training sessions, but we just needed the win and this was a big one for Scotland."

Hearts defender Steven Pressley made an impressive return to the Scotland line-up alongside Dailly and Dundee's Lee Wilkie.

"Concentration levels had to be high, but both Christian and Lee beside me did a fantastic job today and made my job easier," he said.

"It was a great result for us and we worked extremely hard as a team.

"We are delighted. We have taken four points from our opening two away games, which is a reasonable start."

Scotland captain Paul Lambert said: "The heart and the desire was very, very strong and, when you are hurting, it is good to come out and rectify it in the next game."

Iceland boss Atli Edvaldsson thought the result made Scotland favourites to finish behind Germany in Group Five.

"I knew that, although they were playing badly, it was going to be a different Scotland team today," he said.

"They are a good team, we lost an early goal and, after that, we were disappointing."
