| Saturday, 30 November, 2002, 19:12 GMT Cheltenham 1-0 Brentford Julian Alsop scored a stoppage-time winner to earn 10-man Cheltenham victory over Brentford. Last season's leading goalscorer headed home Martin Devaney's cross to earn his side three precious points in their battle to avoid the drop. They earlier had Grant McCann, on loan from West Ham, sent off for foul and abusive language. Brentford failed to capitalise on their chances, although it needed a fine save from goalkeeper Steve Book to thwart Martin Rowlands moments before Alsop's dramatic winner. The home side twice went close through Devaney and Alsop after they had been reduced to 10 men. In the first half, a sublime lob from Richard Forsyth nearly caught out Brentford goalkeeper Paul Smith, who recovered well to keep out the effort. Cheltenham: Book, Howarth, Mike Duff, Brough, Victory, Devaney, Forsyth, Finnigan, McCann, Alsop, Brayson. Subs: Griffin, Yates, Higgs, McAuley, Spencer. Brentford: Paul Smith, Dobson, Marshall, Sonko, Somner, Rowlands, Evans, Jay Smith, Hunt, O'Connor, McCammon. Subs: Vine, Tabb, Williams, Frampton, Marchena. Referee: K Hill (Hertfordshire) |
