Wimbledon 2-1 Rotherham

Only 849 fans turned up to watch at deserted Selhurst Park as Milton Keynes-bound Wimbledon ended a seven-game winless streak against Rotherham.

It was an all-time record low crowd for Division One, demolishing the previous worst of 2,077 for the Dons' game against Coventry earlier this season.

And 227 of those who turned up came from South Yorkshire to support the Millers.

If there is to be a lower crowd this season at Selhurst it could be next Tuesday, when the two sides meet again in the Worthington Cup.

Given the absence of atmosphere it was little short of amazing that struggling Wimbledon scored courtesy of Neil Shipperley and David Connolly.

Alan Lee's last-gasp strike for Rotherham was a consolation.

The Millers fell behind after 19 minutes when they failed to clear their lines after three consecutive corners and leading scorer Shipperley rose to meet the last of them to head past goalkeeper Mike Pollitt.

Perfect present

It was Shipperley's seventh league goal of the campaign and his 10th in all, and came on the day before his 28th birthday.

The Dons went further ahead on the hour when Shipperley's strike partner Connolly pounced on a bad back pass by Martin McIntosh to slip the ball past Pollitt.

Wimbledon certainly did not look like a side lacking in confidence as they ran out worthy winners in the end.

Rotherham made a game of it, however, and the visitors' top-scorer Lee was a real thorn in the Dons' side.

Millers boss Ronnie Moore threw on prolific scorer Darren Byfield in an attempt to get his side a goal.

But Rob Scott headed over the top with a chance and there was no way back even though Lee headed his 10th of the season with a minute left.

Wimbledon: Davis, Holloway, Leigertwood, Gier, Hawkins, McAnuff, Andersen, Reo-Coker, Darlington, Shipperley, Connolly. Subs: Francis, Agyemang, Heald, Morgan, Gray.

Rotherham: Pollitt, Scott, Swailes, McIntosh, Hurst, Warne, Mullin, Monkhouse, Daws, Richard Barker, Lee. Subs: Bryan, Robins, Talbot, Byfield, Gray.

Referee: G Salisbury (Lancashire)
