| Tuesday, 29 October, 2002, 22:24 GMT Grimsby 6-5 Burnley A scintillating 11-goal thriller ended in Grimsby beating Burnley in dramatic fashion at Blundell Park. Grimsby had just one home win to their name this season before the game and had scored only four times. But a brace from Steve Kabba and goals from Steve Livingstone, Stuart Campbell, Alan Pouton and Simon Ford earned the Mariners a thrilling win. Burnley kept battling back and a Robbie Blake penalty seven minutes from time set up a blockbusting finish. However, Paul Groves' men hung on in a game that was as memorable for its demonstration in finishing as its dreadful defending. Penalty Pouton's surging run helped the home side get off to a dream start, teeing Kabba up to rifle a superb 10-yard strike past keeper Marlon Beresford. Gareth Taylor equalised for the visitors when he scored from close range after being found by an intelligent header from Steve Davis. Six minutes later, a pinpoint Darren Barnard delivery found Livingstone, who restored the home side's advantage with a header from the penalty spot. Burnley restored parity at 2-2 on the half-hour mark when Ian Moore's speculative strike somehow found its way under and past Grimsby goalkeeper Danny Coyne. But, within less than a minute, Kabba took advantage of sloppy defending and swept the ball past Beresford thanks to fine work from substitute Terry Cooke. Cooke's deflected strike helped extend Grimsby's lead after 35 minutes as Campbell pounced on the loose ball to stab home from six yards. But in stoppage time, Robbie Blake gave Ternent's men a lifeline with an excellent volley from 18 yards. Grandstand finish The second half was just five minutes old when Moore whipped in a teasing ball into the penalty area and found Taylor in acres of space. He scored his second goal of the night with a fine right-footed finish to make it 4-4. Mark McGregor was punished for a hand-ball in the area and Pouton converted the resultant spot-kick. Grimsby continued to press forward and put clear daylight between the teams when defender Ford headed in for his first goal since December. But Burnley refused to give in and Blake's penalty in the 83rd minute, after Dimitrios Papadopoulos was hauled down by Barnard, set up a grandstand finish. Papadopoulos and Blake both saw their efforts charged down thanks to some last-ditch defending at the death by Grimsby, who clung on to claim the points.
