Nicky Summerbee was dismissed for violent conduct shortly after a Brian Deane goal gave the Foxes the points in a frenetic, fast-paced game. Deane headed in on 89 minutes to lift his side up to second in the Nationwide League. It was a late reprieve for Leicester, who had gone behind early in the second half to a sublime effort from Coventry midfielder Richie Partridge. Partridge took the ball from just over the halfway line and ran into space, before squeezing past two Leicester defenders and slotting neatly beyond Ian Walker. It was a fine, fine effort from the on-loan Liverpool player.
Leicester's equaliser, however, was almost the exact opposite - scrappy and scored from just a yard out. It was Gerry Taggart who claimed it, forcing the ball over from a corner on 76 minutes despite the presence of three defenders on the Coventry line. It had become clear early on in the game that the poor state of the Walkers Stadium pitch was going to be a key factor in the game. Indeed, most of the first half action was concentrated in short five-minute spell about quarter of an hour into the game. Leicester had the first clear sight of goal on 13 minutes, when Matt Elliott's header was well parried by Hyldgaard. The ball fell to Frank Sinclair, but the Leicester defender could not keep his follow-up shot down. Coventry immediately advanced up to the other end, attacking with such speed that Mills found himself almost entirely unmarked in the Leicester area. But the ball across had too much pace and Mills put wide. A minute later, Paul Dickov had the best of all the chances, going on a mazy run down the left hand side before shooting deftly past Hyldgaard - only to see the ball hit the inside of the post and bounce out.
