Raja sack coach Meeuws

Raja and Meeuws have not gelled
Raja Casablanca, runners-up in the African Champions League, have sacked Belgian coach Walter Meeuws after a series of poor results.

The dismissal has been prompted by Raja's slip to 12th place in the Moroccan first division.

Meeuws' days were numbered after the club lost the Champions League final to Zamalek of Egypt.

It capped a disappointing stint for Meeuws, who ends a year with Raja, which lost the Moroccan championship after five successive title wins.

Raja have drawn eight times in 12 matches this season and are 13 points behind leaders Hassania Agadir.

The 51-year-old Meeuws is a former national coach of Belgium and has worked at Antwerp, Mechelen, Lommel, Ghent and Lierse.

"After losing the Champions League final the atmosphere in the club changed.

"The supporters were also not happy with the league position and the pressure got too much," Meeuws told Belgium's De Standaard newspaper on Wednesday.

"Some directors and even players were threatened," he added.

Officials said Nejmi Mohamed would take over as caretaker coach.

Meeuws is the top name to leave the club this week, but other Raja staff were also shown the door.

Meanwhile, Nourredine Kacemi and Zakaria Aboub, who both played in the Champions League, have been suspended for indiscipline.
