West Indies close to victory
Pedro Collins
Pedro Collins takes the wicket of Das
Final Test, Jamaica, day four (close): India 212 & 237-7 v West Indies 422 & 197

West Indies were close to clinching a series victory at the end of the fourth day as India struggled to 171 runs behind with only three wickets remaining.

Sachin Tendulkar had looked capable of guiding India to a dramatic win, passing 8,000 Test runs as they chased a massive target of 408.

But when India's star man was bowled by Pedro Collins for 86 it appeared that all hope was gone for the tourists.

Ajay Ratra was left unbeaten on 16 and Zaheer Khan on 4 at the close of play, but Collins and Adam Sanford will expect to add to their three wickets apiece on Wednesday.

SS Das
Das was unlucky to be given out lbw early on
India made a terrible start to their second innings as Windies left-arm pace man Collins claimed wickets in his first two overs.

Wasim Jaffer was caught at short leg, and Shiv Sunder Das went lbw soon after.

Rahul Dravid fought back to take the tourists to lunch at 57 for two, before falling lbw to Adam Sanford with the score on 77.

But when Tendulkar came to the crease the match looked to be turning and by tea India were mounting a comeback at 166 for 3.

Undoubtedly his dismissal was the most significant moment of the day, Collins beating him for pace to leave India struggling once again on 170 for 4.

Ganguly fell moments later, while VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh could only add 23 and 17 respectively.

Early fireworks

Earlier in the day, the West Indies had seen their last three wickets fall for the addition of 22 runs in eight overs as they looked to make time to bowl India out.

In being bowled out for 197, the hosts succeeded in setting a fourth innings target two runs higher than the previous Test record achieved by India at Port of Spain in 1976.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul perished during the early fireworks, giving a return catch to Zaheer Khan attempting to repeat a slogged four over midwicket.

Chanderpaul had faced 132 deliveries for his 59, that four the only addition to his overnight total.

But Collins relished the chance to score quick runs.

Having taken 100 minutes to reach six not out, Collins passed his previous Test-best 13 with a wild top-edged four over third man.

And he was last man out, bowled by Harbhajan Singh having reached 24 from 67 balls.

Sanford played and missed at most of his 11 deliveries, gaining a single boundary before top-edging Harbhajan's second delivery of the day to square leg.
