India warm up with win
Anil Kumble
Kumble showed good form to take four wickets
Tour match, Southampton, day three: Hampshire 123 & 186 lost to India 236 & 139-4 dec. by 66 runs

Anil Kumble grabbed a four-wicket haul as India warmed up for this week's first Test against England with a facile 66-run win over Hampshire at Southampton.

The victory would have been more emphatic but for a ninth-wicket stand of 57 between Shaun Udal and youngster James Tomlinson.

Hampshire's cause was not helped by the absence of England batsman John Crawley, who was unable to take the field because of food poisoning.

However, Crawley is expected to be fit in time for the first Test against India at Lord's on Thursday.

Needing 253 to win after a generous India declaration, Hampshire resumed on their overnight 43 for two but suffered a huge blow when skipper Robin Smith (19) fell to the third ball of the day.

Sanjay Bangar
Bangar was the star of the second day

The former England batsman was trapped leg before by Sanjay Bangar, who had starred with both bat and ball on Sunday.

John Francis and Lawrence Prittipaul advanced the score to 80 before Francis (19) failed to keep down a short ball from Tinu Yohannan and gloved a legside catch to wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra.

India then turned to spin and they were rewarded with wickets falling at regular intervals to Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Prittipaul hit a five-boundary 32 before he played all around a delivery from Kumble and was clean bowled.

Hampshire then lost their sixth wicket when Dimitri Mascarenhas (five) was caught off Harbhajan, and were soon eight down when Kumble removed Adrian Aymes (18) and James Hamblin in swift succession.

A pre-lunch finish seemed almost certain but Udal and Tomlinson took the score to 173 for eight at the interval.

India were always in control, however, and soon wrapped things up when another well-flighted delivery from Kumble deceived Tomlinson (23), who was given out leg before.

Udal played well for his unbeaten 36 but India will be happy with a win and, more meaningfully, some solid practice before the first Test.
