Udal downs India
Shaun Udal celebrates
Udal took the prize wicket of Tendulkar for three
Tour match, Southampton, day one of three: Hampshire 33-1 v India 236 all out

Rahul Dravid prepared for the first Test against England with an innings of 78 but Hampshire's Shaun Udal was the star of the first day at the Rose Bowl.

The off-spinner, 33, who gained the last of 10 England one-day caps in 1995, returned five for 59, including Sachin Tendulkar for three, as the tourists were bowled out for 236.

Apart from a 60-run stand between Dravid and Virender Sehwag for the second wicket, the stumps were upset regularly.

Sehwag, made 41 having been promoted to the top of the order in India's continuing search for an opening pair.

But the young Delhi batsman was Udal's first victim, bowled with India a run short of three figures.

Sehwag's partner Wasim Jaffer managed just 13 from 40 balls before edging James Tomlinson behind with just 39 on the board.

VVS Laxman also hung around for just over two hours, but managed 38 before being caught by former Zimbabwe all-rounder Neil Johnson off Udal for 38.

Disappointment

The Rose Bowl crowd were denied the opportunity to watch Tendulkar, when he fell to Udal after facing 20 deliveries

Virender Sehwag
Sehwag was the latest to be used as an opener
And skipper Sourav Ganguly, Dravid and Ajay Ratra fell in quick succession before the break.

Ganguly edged Udal behind for 21and wicketkeeper Ratra was bowled by Hamblin for a single.

India began well, having opener Will Kendall caught first ball in the first over of Hampshire's reply, off Sanjay Bangar.

But John Crawley, who will face the tourists in England colours when the first Test begins at Lord's next Thursday, batted out the last half hour of the day, gaining a single run.
