| England routed by India ![]() Zaheer Khan took the second wicket of the day Third Test, Headingley, day five: England 273 and 303 lose to India 628-8 dec by an innings and 46 runs India have squared the Test series against England after an impressive innings win at Headingley. They comprehensively won on a pitch that was never expected to suit their bowling attack. Spinner Anil Kumble, in superb form with the ball throughout England's second innings, took two of the first three wickets of the day. And fittingly he took the last one too, just before lunch, to prompt wild celebrations from the Indian team. It sets up an exciting climax to the series with the final Test beginning at The Oval on 5 September. Alec Stewart and Nasser Hussain continued their heroics of Sunday evening to move their defiant fifth-wicket partnership deep into the first hour on Monday. But then Hussain fell and it triggered two more quick wickets.
By then Hussain had hit 110, his fourth Test century against India, and his partnership with Stewart was worth 117. Ultimately those efforts were all in vain as the home team's terrible injury problems finally cost them. The vital wicket came when Kumble, in his first over of the day, bowled a top-spinner that Hussain could only edge to Virender Sehwag at short leg. Andrew Flintoff's nightmare association with Headingley continued when he was caught at first slip off the impressive seamer Zaheer Khan moments later. It was a fourth duck in as many Test innings for the big Lancastrian at the Yorkshire ground. He needs an operation to correct a hernia problem and will not play at the Oval. Crumbled In Kumble's second over, Stewart fell for 47, edging a classic leg-break to slip and from a fighting position England had crumbled close to defeat in the space of 10 minutes. Parthiv Patel, the 17-year-old wicket-keeper, was hit a crushing blow to his knee, and limped through the remainder of the session. But he stayed on to see Ashley Giles run himself out in comical fashion while soon afterwards Alex Tudor turned a Harbhajan Singh ball straight to that man Sehwag at short leg. The final wicket came when Andrew Caddick, some eight minutes before what would have been the lunch interval, edged Kumble to Sourav Ganguly at slip.
