Third Test, Headingley, day three (stumps): England 264-9 v India 628-8 dec

Faced with India's record first innings 628 for eight, England crumbled on the third day at Headingley, ending it with little chance of avoiding the follow-on in the third Test.

Alec Stewart finally found an ally in Ashley Giles, their eighth-wicket stand adding 70 runs to at least save the hosts having to start their second innings on a third evening that went on until 1915BST.

But the damage had already been done, a bright opening partnership of 67 by Michael Vaughan and Robert Key blunted by an effective combination of accurate pace and spin from India.

At stumps, the hosts were 264 for nine, with Stewart, who survived a chance before he had scored, 71 not out and Matthew Hoggard yet to get off the mark.

Anil Kumble kept an unrelenting pressure through an afternoon in which three wickets fell.

And Harbhajan Singh took wickets with successive deliveries shortly after tea to leave England reeling.

Zaheer Khan and Agit Agarkar also played their part, left-armer Khan having Key caught at slip for 30 and Nasser Hussain lbw for 25.

And there could have been a third had Sanjay Bangar taken an ankle high chance at third slip as Stewart edged the first ball he faced.

Agarkar was a revelation, far removed from the bowler who was punished ruthlessly in the previous two Tests.

He picked up the vital wicket of Vaughan for 61, the Yorkshireman mistiming a drive to cover, and forced Alex Tudor into an edge to third slip with the first ball of his second spell.

Tudor faced 23 deliveries for a single run after avoiding the hat-trick ball from Harbhajan.

The off-spinner had already dealt with John Crawley, taken at leg slip as he looked to follow the spin, and Andrew Flintoff lbw, failing to offer a shot.

Kumble finally took a second scalp when he had Giles lbw for 25 after an hour-long stand with Stewart.

And a straighter delivery from Harbhajan saw Andrew Caddick lose his off stump for one.

Stewart played a patient innings, but took his chances well in facing just 109 deliveries, bringing up his 40th Test half-century and his 25,000th first-class run during the knock.

Wickets tumbled early in the day as the tourists looked for quick runs, but India captain Sourav Ganguly finally declared just before midday.

The total surpassed the 606 for nine by Mohammad Azharuddin's side in a drawn third Test at The Oval in 1990 as the side's highest ever on foreign soil.

But Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed seven short of what would have been his first ever double-century away from home.

Tendulkar was lbw, struck surprisingly low on the pad by Andrew Caddick, within 24 of his career-high 217.

Caddick was handed two further wickets in the morning, Agarkar bowled making space outside off-stump and Harbhajan Singh lofting to midwicket.

VVS Laxman was the other batsman to fall, taken with a superb diving catch by Hussain at mid-off.
