| Sunday, 4 March, 2001, 15:39 GMT Greene says no to World Indoors Maurice Greene: Concentrating on the summer Olympic 100m champion Maurice Greene will not be competing at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Lisbon. Greene told reporters he wants to concentrate on the outdoor World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, in the summer instead. He also said he aims to lower his 100m world record of 9.79secs. "I tell you I'm not going," he said. "I haven't even brought my passport here with me."
"My aim this year is to defend my 100m and 200m titles at the World Championships." The news will be a disappointment to organisers of the championships in Lisbon. On Friday at the US Indoor Championships in Atlanta, Greene equalled his 60m world record of 6.39secs in the semi-finals before going on to take the title. Greene's coach, John Smith, said: "That told us Maurice is in shape to break his outdoor mark." Greene, however, was unimpressed. "I came here to break my record - not tie it. "In my semi I slowed down with the last couple of strides. "I regret that now. I don't know why I did it. If I hadn't, I would have run 6.37secs." US team for Indoor World Championships: Men Women |
