The former world number one and 1991 US Masters champion will be part of one of the strongest fields ever to compete in Wales. Ryder Cup stars Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood, with 34 titles between them, and defending champion Paul McGinley have already confirmed their involvement. A record prize fund of 1.1m will be on offer at this year's event, which will be played on the par 72 Wentwood Hills course - home of the 2010 Ryder Cup. Woosnam's best finish at the event came at the inaugural Wales Open in 2000. "I always enjoy playing in Wales in front of my home crowd and I am really looking forward to a great week," he said. The 44-year-old, now approaching the twilight of his career, has recently enjoyed a return to form. After finishing tied third in the 2001 Open Championship, he became the oldest winner of the 2001 Cisco World Match Play Championship at Wentworth, beating Padraig Harrington in an epic final. Said Wales Open Tournament Chairman Andy Stanton: "It is always great to get Ian's name on our start sheet and we're delighted to see him in such good form. "The local fans are obviously also thrilled to see him playing at home and he always pulls in big crowds." |
