World super-middleweight boxing champion Joe Calzaghe has yet another title under his belt after being named the 2001 BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year.

The awards night, at Cardiff's St David's Hall, also saw Welsh soccer legend John Charles honoured with a merit award.

Calzaghe, who has made nine defences of his WBO title, joined fellow Welsh boxing greats Howard Winstone and Steve Robinson in the list of winners.

BBC One Wales viewers watched Calzaghe raise the trophy after the presentation by former boxing star Michael Watson.

Olympic champion Linford Christie presented the second place award to Newport sprinter Christian Malcolm, who broke the Welsh 100 and 200 metre records in the 2001 World Championships.

Joint third place went to golfer Phil Price. who was picked for the European Ryder Cup team and Ian Woosnam, who came third in the Open Championship - despite a caddie's club mix-up - and won the World Matchplay Championship.

The team award was won by the Rhondda Rebels' basketball squad, who scooped the Cup, League and Playoffs treble - and then became the first British women's team to play in Europe since 1987.

The Carwyn James Junior Awards - now in their 19th year - went to world champion cyclist Nicole Cooke, from Wick, and Peterstone-super-Ely sprinter Tim Benjamin.

Cooke currently holds world junior titles in trial, road race and mountain biking, and is also the senior British Road Race champion.

Benjamin is the reigning European junior 400m champion, having stepped up from the 200m distance just a year ago.

He competed in the senior relay at the World Championships in Edmonton alongside fellow Welshmen Jamie Baulch and Iwan Thomas.

The 2001 Merit Award went to soccer legend John Charles, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday.

Charles starred in a glittering career for Leeds, Cardiff and Wales and the 'Gentle Giant' is still a world-revered star - especially in Italy.
