![]() | Thursday, 20 December, 2001, 15:23 GMT Calzaghe's excitement brewing ![]() Calzaghe dismantled Will McIntyre inside four rounds Wales' Joe Calzaghe promises to deliver an exciting fight when he makes his next title defence against American Charles Brewer in Cardiff. The World Boxing Organization super-middleweight champion will make his 10th title defence on 9 February against an opponent who he expects to trade blow for blow. Brewer is a former International Boxing Federation champion with 37 wins and 26 knock-outs to his name, who has always been regarded as a dangerous puncher. But Calzaghe has always backed his own power and is eager to face the challenge of an opponent nicknamed 'The Hatchet'.
"It's going to be a very explosive fight," Calzaghe said. "Charles Brewer is a very good opponent, he's a big puncher so I promise you it'll be a great fight. "He comes forward looking for the knock-out and I do the same. So as soon as that first bell goes, we'll just head towards each other in the middle of the ring and unload our weapons." Calzaghe dismantled his last opponent, Will McIntyre, inside four rounds, fighting on the Mike Tyson-Brian Neilson card out in Copenhagen. Never short of confidence, 29-year-old Calzaghe predicts that Brewer will also not last much beyond the fourth round at the Wales National Ice Rink. "Basically when I connect on his chin he's going to get knocked out, simple as that. "I'm a proud champion and there's no way he's going to come over and take my title. "I love giving the Yanks a whipping - they talk a big fight and I just love them coming over so I can send them packing." Calzaghe's promoter, Frank Warren, had hoped his man would be able to defend his title on American soil, only for a clash with the Winter Olympics to derail the plans. But the Newbridge boxer is never happier than when fighting on home turf, in front of his fans.
"Going to America is purely financial, we see it as a bigger egg to crack and it will happen eventually, I think in the summer. "But it's great to be home in Cardiff. I love fighting at home and I'm sure it'll be great for the fans. "My aim is to continue like I've done over my last four defences - win comfortably and look impressive at the same time." Calzaghe also hope for impressive things from the Cardiff undercard, which includes lightweight Bradley Pryce and featherwight Gavin Rees who are both trained by Calzaghe's father, Enzo. Pryce and Rees will both fight for WBO intercontinental titles, while fellow Welshman Gary Lockett will contest the vacant Commonwealth light-middleweight crown. "It's a great time for British boxing and a great time for Welsh boxing," Calzaghe added. "Long may it continue." |
